The Upper Highway area, west of the city of Durban, includes the suburb of Kloof, offers a country lifestyle with undulating hills, valleys and gorges and plenty of wide open spaces.

Kloof borders the 500-hectare Krantzkloof Nature Reserve which cuts through a ravine along which the Molweni River runs and cascades into intermittent waterfalls. The reserve is rich in birdlife and beauty. Homes in the area are large with leafy gardens and lovely views.

There is so much to do in the Upper Highway area. From visiting the many reserves – Krantzkloof, Shongweni, Springside – to mountain biking in the Giba Gorge. The Shongweni Nature Reserve is one of the top bird sanctuaries in South Africa and a national heritage site. The Giba Gorge offers a number of trails, a BMX track and a restaurant – all boasting magnificent views of the Giba Valley.

The Shongweni Market is a delightful farmer’s market held every Saturday morning and allows locals and visitors from the coast to stock up on organic fresh produce while strolling through the farm stall displays and enjoying country fare.

Kloof is the perfect place from which to start exploring the nearby Valley of a 1000 Hills. Whether you do it by car or on the 1000 Hills Choo Choo train ride - it is a lovely experience. Spend the day enjoying the sweeping views or stopping in to visit the three Zulu Cultural Villages or the numerous tea gardens and friendly pubs.

Kloof is very popular and offers a wide-range of accommodation options to the market. A great attraction for many families is the fact that the area is home to the most sought-after schools in KwaZulu-Natal including Kearsney College, St Mary’s DSG, Thomas More College and Highbury.
