In the outskirts of Houten lies an elegant homestead, a detached farmhouse, which has been part of the Castle Heemsteede since 1870, is nowadays located in glorious conditions and that is thanks to the current owners who completely restored the building between 2005 and 2007. The major reconstruction work, in which the former cheese farm was expanded in style with guest accommodation and an integral garage, were carried out meticulously and with a great sense of history. The formerly ruinous castle farm, a municipal monument, is now more beautiful than ever before and features modern comforts. The authentic layout was left completely undisturbed, but the different areas were given a new destination. Where there is now a spacious living room (approx. 100 m2), used to be where the cows were.
The floor of wide oak planks, combined with antique Ijssel stones, the old trusses and the monumental fireplace, lend a robust appearance to the sitting room.
The patio doors open up to a lovely terrace, located to the south, to the back of the farm, with an enchanting view on the garden and the castle park.
Behind the partition wall with a fireplace is a passage to the studio and the garage. Thanks to the separate location of the atmospheric studio with a bathroom this could also be extremely suitable for a live in nanny or as playroom for the children. Here are also patio doors to a large, partially covered terrace.
In the side facade of the farm, one arrives in the centrally located beautiful hall through the original antique shared side door, with a unique floor of Belgian hard stone tiles with writing motif. The kitchen and living space of the farmers family used to be here. The new kitchen, completely done in the traditional style, with a rear wall of old whites, a valiant stove of Boretti and a beautiful fireplace, has been realised where the Sunday sitting room once was. The oxblood red beamed ceiling harmonises perfectly with the terracotta coloured floor of antique flagstones.
In the front house there is the original front door in the front facade and through a hallway with a rare beautiful original tile floor one comes into the central hall. The two quarters at the front side are currently in use as workrooms, but of course lend themselves for various purposes, such as a practice or office at home with own entrance.
The upstairs room even had a bed box. The upper floor, originally the hayloft, has been completely pulled into the living space, which is why the farm now has a habitable surface area of nearly 550 m2.
On the south side the beautiful master bedroom with a bathroom is located and on the north side there is an equally large guest room with a bathroom. Furthermore, there are another two smaller bedrooms with a third bathroom. The possibility exists to realise a fifth bedroom with a bathroom in a quite simple way. All the required pipes and connections are already located behind the bulkhead. Below all the tile floors there is electric floor heating, with a very comfortable living climate as a consequence.
Above the first floor there is a spacious attic which offers various possibilities of use.
For the renovation only the use of authentic materials has been made, such as old doors and antique heating elements, while all the painting work was done in beautiful, warm colours, which approach the original colour schemes as much as possible.
All the woodwork has been made with an adze.
The atmosphere is best described as warm and homely, with a whiff of Provence.
Around Homestead Dorothea there is a beautiful garden of approx. 3.5 acres, constructed after a design by garden architect Loek Copijn in a style which does justice to the farm. Beautiful hedges, shrubs and trees, royal borders, many hydrangeas, a lavender lane and a kitchen garden, sprawling lawns and vistas which fascinate persistently. How else, with a garden which borders a real castle park and another golf course nearby. And as skyline the impressive silhouette of Castle Heemstede.
All together this farm is a true paradise. Tastefully restored, lovingly inhabited and perfectly maintained. What a location to live in.
