Phoenix at a glance

Phoenix is situated northwest of central Durban, KZN. It was established as a township in 1976. It is associated with the Phoenix Settlement, built by Mahatma Gandhi. Today Phoenix is the largest “Indian” town in South Africa.

Residential areas surrounding Phoenix are Verulam, Ottawa, Mount Edgecombe, Broadlands, Avoca Hills, Effingham etc. All are close to strategic business, commercial and industrial growth nodes that have evolved along with the new King Shaka International Airport, Phoenix Industrial Park, Riverhorse Valley and the Dube Tradeport are important sources of investment and employment.

The Phoenix Plaza, Gem City, Starwood Mall, Mount Edgecombe Plaza, and Whitehouse Shopping Centre are some of the shopping centres found in Phoenix s CBD. These centres cater for various needs from top brand shops to local products.

Public education in Phoenix is provided by various Primary and Secondary Schools, one Technicon and various colleges. There is one major government hospital ( Mahatma Gandhi Hospital) and one private hospital ( Mount Edgecombe Hospital) and various small health clinics. Sports grounds/fields, indoor sports centre and many places of worship like Churches, Mosques and Temples.

One main means of transport is taxis and the other is rail system. Phoenix does have its own railway station.

Phoenix is a mere 5 to 7 minutes drive to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, the popular Umhlanga Beach and the Sibaya Casino and entertainment world.
